Emera Oval 

Head to Halifax for a family skate on the Emera Oval. No need to worry if you don’t own skates as free equipment rentals are available. Borrow hockey or figure skates, sledges, skate aids, and helmets for use on the Oval. Check out the daily skate schedule before you head out as the Oval is closed for regular maintenance periods throughout the day.

Afterwards, head to a nearby café like Café Lara, Dilly Dally Coffee Cafe, Glitter Bean Café, or Alteregos Café for a hot drink and a treat!

Visit Museums

Check out Ross Farm Museum during March Break to visit the animals, take part in an artifact hunt, and enjoy tasty treats including homemade ice cream. If weather allows, enjoy a sleigh ride and a cup of hot chocolate afterwards.

There are also many other museums open throughout the province to explore during March Break. Pay a visit to the Museum of Natural History, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Museum of Industry, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, Firefighters’ Museum or Discovery Centre.

Visit the Beach

Who says Nova Scotia’s beaches are just for the summer? Enjoy a sunny March day at the beach! Pack a picnic, take a beach stroll and dig out the beach toys. Have you ever made a sandcastle in March? Take your beach adventure to the next level and add a scavenger hunt to your trip. Can you find three different shells? Count the seagulls, find a strangely shaped rock, or a piece of driftwood! Spend the day and catch the winter sunset.

Winter Hikes

Take some time during March Break to explore a trail or two in Nova Scotia. National and Provincial Parks are open throughout the winter (with no maintenance) as are Point Pleasant Park in Halifax and Victoria Park in Truro. Try a new trail or park than the ones you typically explore. Bring cross-country skis, snowshoes or sleds along the family dog for outdoor fun together!

Support a local sports team during March Break by attending a hockey game in several communities throughout the province. Whether it’s the Halifax Mooseheads, Cape Breton Eagles, Amherst Ramblers, South Shore Lumberjacks, Valley Wildcats, Antigonish Bulldogs, Truro Bearcats, Weeks Crushers or Yarmouth Mariners, cheer on your favourite team during this family-friendly outing! The Halifax Thunderbirds lacrosse team have two home games on Friday, March 7 and Friday, March 14, 2025.
